System House

Residential

RED Studio creatively organized this home on its corner lot in North Toronto, maximizing privacy without compromising on natural daylight. We achieved many environmental initiatives in the design of this home, most significantly the innovative and environmentally sound passive heating and cooling strategies.

The house functions as an assemblage of complex systems forming a whole – the house as a machine. These systems include the use of thermal mass, natural ventilation, daylight strategies, passive cooling, rainwater harvesting and geothermal heating and cooling. The gestalt of these systems creates a fluid process, like cogs functioning in a well-oiled machine.
