The Narrow House is a reflection of Red Studio’s design philosophy—a commitment to regenerative design, environmental stewardship, and creating spaces that support human health and well-being.

Located in North Toronto, this 15-foot-wide row house was originally constructed in 1913. When purchased, many of the home’s original features remained intact, including its kitchen, offering an opportunity to preserve its character while reimagining it for contemporary living. The renovation was carefully tailored to meet the evolving needs of the family while embodying the principles that define Red Studio’s approach to architecture.

 

More than a renovation, the Narrow House serves as a living laboratory where innovative building systems, healthy materials, and passive design strategies are tested and experienced every day. The project demonstrates that sustainable design is not simply a professional philosophy—it is a way of life. By making their own home a case study, Red Studio founders Antonio and Denise have chosen to lead by example, showcasing how thoughtful design can create resilient, high-performing homes that deliver long-term environmental, economic, and human benefits.

Designed to operate entirely on solar power, the home prioritizes comfort, efficiency, and resilience through an integrated approach to building performance. Radiant floor heating, dedicated heating and ventilation systems, and carefully controlled air distribution provide precise thermal comfort throughout the home. Strategically placed operable windows and ceiling fans encourage natural ventilation and gentle air movement that mimics outdoor breezes, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling while enhancing occupant comfort.

The home’s outdoor spaces are seamlessly integrated with the interior, extending the living environment and strengthening the connection between people and nature. Every design decision—from energy systems to spatial planning—supports a healthier indoor environment while reducing environmental impact.
